Sinners

Prologue/Title Sequence

Ryan Coogler and team reached out to discuss an opening sequence for their upcoming Sinners film. The sequence needed to be tonally appropriate for the movie but also give the audience context for the story of Sammy, his cousins, and the dangers lurking around them.

Sinners Prologue Sequence

Linocut style art for the Sinners title sequence.

Our team discussed a few different handmade aesthetics with Ryan and team, ultimately settling on the linocut/woodcut style for the prologues sequence.

I was able to find a uniquely talented linocut artist, Mike Black, who worked digitally and physically in this medium. We then set up a pipeline of digitally sketching these ideas and building a 3D scene to mimic the hand cut qualities of linocut, using reference from Mike’s work for things like texture and cut marks. Within that scene we could then control lighting, camera, and manage revisions easier than by hand-cutting each scene.

This all resulted in an unbelievably beautiful and haunting sequence for Sinners.
