Great Wall - AI Rebuild

There is a special magic when history meets emerging technology. Intel partnered with the China Foundation for Cultural Heritage Conservation to assess damage in some of the more remote sections of the Great Wall. I helped produce visualizations of Intel’s Drone Vision and Machine Learning as part of this epic undertaking.

The Great Wall of China was built around 2,500 years ago and stands as awe inspiring example of ancient defensive engineering, but some of the more remote and mountainous areas have suffered some decay and deterioration. Intel set out on an expedition to use Drone Vision and Machine Learning to survey and assess these damaged sections and allow AI to assist in the reconstruction efforts. Since these areas were difficult for crews to access, drones made it safer and easier to reach the Wall and capture critical data.

As part of their process, Intel approached us as a design partner than could help translate how these complex technologies analyzed the physical terrain and identified areas for repair. Our first step was to understand the tech through discussion with the Intel team prior to their expedition to China. Our creative team then designed several concepts to explore different ways of representing the drone survey and image processing, from very technical and detailed designs to more organic forms.

Working with Intel, we selected a Point Cloud style for the visuals because it showed both the complexity of the mapping and data collection while also being a clear depiction of the process.

"It’s all looking great!

Love it."
